Nasha Winters... 1991 Nasha Winters was on her way to becoming a conventional medical doctor when her own life threatening illness intervened and sent her onto a new path to pursue the field of Naturopathic Medicine. Originally drawn to working with addictions in the Native American population as a Certified Addictions Counselor, Nasha got exposed to traditional Native American healing practices that stimulated her interest in traditional medicine from around the world. She has spent many years traveling through Europe, Northern Africa, the Middle East, Asia, India and Mexico, studying with a variety of healers and exploring diverse perspectives on healthcare. In 1995 Nasha graduated from Fort Lewis College in Durango, CO with a Bachelors degree in Psychology and minor in Biology. She graduated from the International Institute of Chinese Medicine in Albuquerque, NM in 2000 receiving a Masters in Chinese Medicine and is a NCCAOM certified Diplomate of Chinese Medicine with an emphasis in Chinese Herbs and acupuncture. She received her doctorate in Naturopathic Medicine from Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in 2003 and completed a year and a half residency with Dr. Louise Edwards in Durango, CO. She currently carries her ND license in the state of Washington being that Colorado is not yet licensed. Nasha has interned with many naturopathic physicians around the United States. Her clinical rotations in a variety of settings include: HIV/AIDS, residential dual diagnosis, pain management, Gerson Cancer Clinic, residential heroin and methamphetamine rehabilitation, general family practice, endocrinology, neurology and working on a fellowship in integrative oncology. Dr. Winters had the honor of spending four summers working the medicine tent at the Little Big Medicine Sundance in the Four Corners catering to a diverse array of medical complaints from dehydration to diabetes. She is working on a grant to offer integrated health care and nutritional counseling to the native people in and around her community with an emphasis on addictions and diabetes. Dr. Winters took over her esteemed-colleague, Louise Edwards, ND, L.Ac practice in 2004 blending ancient wisdom with modern science to bring individuals back to balance in mind, body and spirit. She works to enliven the vital force in all her clients with methods including diet and nutrition, homeopathy, acupuncture, herbal and supplement therapy, lifestyle counseling, constitutional hydrotherapy, detoxification, and specialty laboratory testing. She has a particular passion for working with chronic illness such as autoimmune disorders, endocrinology, and supporting clients with cancer. Nasha is excited to introduce the certified gluten free commercial teaching kitchen (Hippocrates’ Kitchen---Let Food Be Thy Medicine and Medicine Be Thy Food) in the newly relocated Namaste Health Center (Sept. 2011). Clients will be inspired to make healthy diet/lifestyle choices with a variety of cooking classes, consultations and “how to shop for and stock” a healthy kitchen. Nasha is also working with a group of health care professionals and interested parents along with the 9 R School District to create Durango’s local “Food Revolution” inspired by the Jamie Oliver Food Revolution movement spurred around the nation. Dr. Winters is developing programs abroad for Healing Adventure Retreats. She has conducted Women and Cancer retreats in Mexico with another one scheduled for the desert Southwest on the San Juan River October 13-17, 2011 (Thriving on the River). She is planning an Ayurvedic immersion experience in Kerala, India sometime in late 2012/early 2013. Another Women and Cancer retreat is planned for Costa Rica in 2012. • • •

In her quest for knowledge regarding alternative medicine therapies, Stacy happened to find an internet entry about naturopathic medicine…or did it find her? She was so elated to find that there were ways to integrate her love for plants and nutrition with her passion for healing! She headed west to continue the journey at Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in Tempe, AZ. In this setting she had the opportunity to train with many different physicians who nurtured their patients using herbal medicine, homeopathy, acupuncture and nutritional therapies. These healers treated a wide range of acute and chronic diseases. She also had the opportunity to learn about addictions and mental health issues ranging from acute care at the Mission of Mercy, to the chronically ill patients at AIDS Project AZ. Dr. Mulkey’s total healthcare experience spans over 20 years, including 10 years working in the conventional hospital setting prior to attending naturopathic medical school. She is extremely grateful for that time she spent working in the hospital because it gave her a sense of satisfaction and appreciation in caring for people. However, she soon learned that despite all of the advances that have been made in modern medicine, there were still too many people with chronic diseases that were not being helped. Her basic philosophy includes helping others discover the root cause of symptoms and addressing the person as a whole body, mind and spirit in order to help the body heal itself. She believes that the best way to accomplish this goal is by blending together the best of our time-honored nature cures, such as herbal medicine, hydrotherapy, homeopathy, and nutritional therapies, with more recent advances in medicine such as neurotransmitter testing and colored light therapy. Dr. Mulkey earned her B.S. in dual majors of Biology and Health Care Management from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in 1993. She graduated from Southwest College of Naturopathic Medicine in 2004 and established a busy private practice in Phoenix. Stacy is extremely excited and honored to join the very talented practitioners at Namaste Health Center. She continues to hold a license to practice Naturopathic Medicine from Arizona and specializes in working with patients who are struggling with chronic fatigue, auto-immune disorders, digestive disturbances, hormone imbalances, allergies, and acute or chronic stress. Dr. Mulkey has a family practice and enjoys helping people of all ages along their path to optimal health. • • •

Julia attended Colorado College, studying dance and movement sciences. Here she was first introduced to acupuncture, East Asian energy healing, and medicinal Chinese cooking. Julia finished her college education at Humboldt State University in the Pacific Northwest. Her degree combined environmental sciences, dance and multicultural studies. The Pacific Northwest taught her that all life is intertwined, and that the health of an individual is connected to the health of her family, community, ecosystem and planet. Here she also began teaching yoga and dance to children and adults, nurturing her sense of play and wonder. After getting her degree, Julia moved back to Durango, where she was first exposed to the true potential of natural medicine. Facing her own serious illness, she began treatment with Doctors Nasha Winters and Louise Edwards of Namaste. Her profound healing experience convinced Julia of the power of natural medicine. This launched her journey into the study of East Asian medicine. Her post-graduate studies have included courses in non-needling techniques for children, Japanese style moxibustion, herb/drug interactions, the use of herbal formulas from the Sichuan Fire School perspective, and a 6 week mentorship in Japanese style acupuncture. She is certified by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine, and licensed in both Oregon and Colorado. She is also certified as a NADA Acupuncture Detoxification Specialist. Julia has been a teaching assistant for Japanese Meridian Therapy and Advanced Shiatsu classes, and has facilitated parent groups in the practice of Infant Massage. Before returning to Durango, Julia developed a private practice in Portland Oregon, treating people of all ages with a wide variety of health challenges. She especially loves to work with children and other needle-sensitive patients with gentle needling and non-needling techniques. She is a mother of 2 bouncing boys, and feels this gives her a special understanding of the health challenges that many families face today. Julia is thrilled to fulfill her dream, returning to Durango to join the amazing “Team Namaste”! She feels blessed to again call Durango home, where she lives, plays and snuggles with her husband, Ben, and two amazing sons, Cedar and Teo. • • •
